Outside of my primary practice area of small business and entrepreneur law, I also handle conservatorships and other estate planning for families with special needs. One of the most important steps in the planning is to consider a conservatorship once the child with special needs turns 18. The conservatorship gives the primary caregivers, often the parents or grandparents, the ability to continue making medical and/or financial decisions on behalf of the young adult. To initiate the process, I have my clients fill out a Conservatorship Questionnaire. This helps analyze the needs for a conservatorship and gather much of the needed information to move forward.
